KISA Shield - Call Screening and Scam Protection for Elderly Australians and NDIS Participants

Staying connected shouldn’t mean staying vulnerable. KISA Shield keeps users safe from scams and unwanted callers. By managing approved and blocked numbers, it ensures only trusted contacts can reach the user. It is an effortless way to protect independence and confidence, helping families stay connected without the worry.

Protection from Unwanted Calls

KISA Shield is a call screening and protection service designed especially for KISA Phone and KISA Companion users. It filters out unwanted, unsafe, or fraudulent calls, ensuring the user only speaks with trusted contacts.

By blocking spam, scams, telemarketing and abusive calls, KISA Shield helps protect older Australians, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable users from being taken advantage of or harassed.

Keeping You Safe from Scams

According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), elderly Australians experience the highest financial losses from scams, with phone calls being the most damaging method.

KISA Shield provides essential protection by automatically blocking calls from known scam and private numbers. It also gives families and caregivers control to decide who can (and can’t) reach their loved one, offering reassurance that every call is safe.

Simple to Set Up and Manage

Once the KISA Shield service is activated, managing it is simple:

  • Log in to your account via the MyKISA portal or MyKISA app.
  • Choose your settings - either whitelist (approved callers only) or blacklist (block selected numbers).
  • Update anytime - changes are applied automatically as long as the KISA device is turned on.

KISA’s secure systems take care of the rest, quietly filtering every incoming call so the user only hears from the people they trust, free from fear of harassment, scams, abuse and fraud.

How KISA Shield Works

Once the KISA Shield service is activated, managing it is simple:

  • Whitelist mode: Only approved contacts can call the KISA device. All other numbers are blocked, including private or unknown callers.
  • Blacklist mode: All numbers can call except those you choose to block and numbers already registered as scams or frauds.
  • Automatic protection: KISA automatically blocks calls from known scam databases and private numbers.
  • Real-time updates: Lists are managed through the MyKISA portal or app and synchronised instantly.

This intuitive setup provides reliable, automated protection - no complex menus, passwords, or apps required.

What is whitelisting and blacklisting?

  • Whitelisting will limit the calls made to the KISA device, allowing only those programmed into the phone to call it, meaning the KISA user will only hear from people you trust.
  • Selecting the whitelist option allows you to create and maintain a list of numbers that have been approved to call the KISA user. This means that even if Cousin Robert's number isn't programmed into the device, he can still call and chat.
  • Blacklisting lets you block specific phone numbers from calling the KISA device, while allowing all other calls to come through.
  • You can then create and maintain a list of numbers you want to block from calling the KISA user.

Common Questions About Call Screening and Scam Protection

The most effective way to protect an elderly parent from phone scams is to limit who can call them in the first place. Rather than relying on the person to recognise and reject scam calls - which becomes harder with age, illness, or dementia - KISA Shield uses a whitelist approach: only pre-approved contacts can get through. Private numbers, unknown callers, and numbers matching known scam databases are blocked automatically. This removes the burden from the person answering the phone and ensures that when the KISA Phone rings, the caller is always someone they know and trust.

The most reliable call blocker for elderly people is one that does not require the person to make any decisions at all. Standalone call blocking devices that display caller information still require the user to read the screen and decide whether to answer - a step that becomes difficult with dementia or cognitive decline. KISA Shield builds call screening directly into the KISA device, so all filtering happens automatically. Family members or carers manage the approved contacts list through the MyKISA portal, and the device only rings when the caller is on the list.

Call screening on KISA devices is managed through the KISA Shield service. Carers or family members set up an approved contacts list through the MyKISA portal. When a call comes in, the system checks the number against that list. If the caller is approved, the device rings as normal. If they are not, the call is blocked silently - the device does not ring, and the user is never alerted to the attempt. A blacklist option also allows specific numbers to be permanently blocked. Both lists can be updated at any time without touching the device.

Yes. KISA Shield includes a whitelist mode that allows only pre-approved contacts to call the KISA Phone. When this is active, calls from any number not on the approved list - including unknown, private, and international numbers - are blocked before the phone rings. This completely eliminates scam call attempts reaching the device. The approved contacts list is managed by a family member or carer through the MyKISA portal and can include as many contacts as needed, including family, GP, pharmacy, and regular service providers.
